On Sunday 8th August the annual ( 2009 ) invitation pairs took place with a small number of pairs taking part. Traditionally, as the name of the competition implies, other clubs ( Dirleton, Gullane and Longniddry ) are invited to enter pairs, and in the past this has usually meant not only that an extra rink or two had to be added to the green to cope but that the number of pairs wanting to play exceeded the room available. Nowadays though, as is happening everywhere, it is difficult to attract people to these competitions and so this year the organisers were pleased to have sixteen pairs. As is the case in these competitions the first phase is run in the round-robin format, with every pair playing once against the other pairs in their section. The winners of each section progressing to the knockout stage The first section games had the best of the weather with only a little falling near the end of those games. It is important to win your first section game as you very often only have to then win one of your remaining two games to go through to the next stage. It was no surprise then to see that most of the more experienced players did win these early encounters. None more so than Jackie Greenwood and partner who would be a pair to watch out for as Jackie has a good pedigree in these tournaments. For the two remaining rounds of the sections stage the players had to contend with heavy rain for much of the time, although the green was still running well. When those games came to a close the section winners who would progress were Jackie Greenwood and partner, Brian & Janette Hunter, Alan Brown and Daughter Jacqueline Fraser and a pair from Dirleton Bowling Club. Both semi-finals were played in a good spirit and provided enjoyable entertainment. The winners were Jackie Greenwood and partner and the family duo of Brian and Janette. The final itself looked to be heading towards a one sided game with Jackie racing to a 5-0 lead but the Hunter pairing pulled it back to 5-3 and then on what turned out to be the last end Brian and Janette peeled the game at 5-5. An extra end was then played with Jackie and partner winning the trophy. |
