On Monday 21st June Aberlady visited Prestongrange in this competition, and came away with a win that takes them through to finals day ( today Saturday 26th June ). The game was keenly contested with the outcome in doubt until the final end.In the semi-final at Macmerry, in very wet weather, Aberlady lost out to East Linton. Throughout most of the game the shots difference accross the green was in single figures. Jock Cunningham's rink ( 4 shots up )was first off the green, and they could only watch as East Linton did enough on the other two rinks to progress to the final where they would play Tranent who triumphed over Castlepark. It was also the start of the Gents Championship with the following games being played; The game on rink 4 between Lindsey Bell and Mike Carey turned out to be the game of the night. Games between the two are always close and this was no exception with it ending 21-20 in Mike's favour, after he was 19-15 down and saved the game with his last bowl on three occasions. Rink five hosted a re-run of last years final between Derek Ward and Jock Brodie, with Derek getting revenge for last year with a fine 21-12 win. On rink six Bill Dunleavey quite comfortably saw off the challenge of new member John Hamilton. Other Championship results were; F. Burnett ( w/o ) v K. Hope D. Malcolm 12 J. Cunningham 21 K. On Sunday 9th May, some Aberlady club members competed in the annual Youth and Adults competition at Stenton Bowling Club. For one Aberlady pair the day proved very successful as Jock Brodie and Ben Ingle ( skip ) won the competition. All the other Aberlady youngsters also aquitted themselves well throughout the day. Friendly Match
On Saturday 1st May Carrickknowe Bowling Club visited Aberlady for a friendly match. On a sunny and warm day - a contrast to the evening before - everyone enjoyed a competitive encounter with fun and laughter the order of the day - whether that was an effect of the amount of alcohol consumed, or some of the bowls played, is open to debate. Although immaterial in such a game the score was favourable to Aberlady who finished up on shots. Opening Day
In previous seasons the number of members taking to the green for the opening day game has been around thirty to forty. It was to everyone's surprise and delight then when fifty four players took part this year. There were so many in fact that two extra rinks had to be put on to accommodate them.T Shirts Donated Before the game there was a presentation of polo shirts - kindly donated by David Niven - to the youth section of the club. The photograph shows David ( centre ) flanked by the youths, with Jock Brodie ( left ) and Alan Brown ( right ) who look after the Junior/Youth section. This was followed by a further presentation, this time to two long standing members of the club. After his welcome to all those in attendance President Bill Dunleavey presented Alec Birse and Freddie Burnett with framed certificates to celebrate them being awarded Honorary Membership in recognition of their service to the club. The game itself was played between two teams, one representing the President, the other the Match Secretary, with the latter's team winning quite comfortably. Due to the inclement weather the game was cut short, with only around half the agreed fourteen ends being played. Sprinkler
The club has aquired a new sprinkler system and it has now been installed. This should make the Greenkeeper's job a little less time consuming and help to keep the green in peak condition throughout the season. The Committee thanks everyone who helped with the installation.League Points
At the 2004 AGM of East Lothian Bowling Association a change was made to the points system for the Gents Evening Leagues. There will only be eight points available in each league match, instead of ten points previously. This will consist of two points for each winning rink and a further two points for the over all score. Also it was decided by a large majority that league teas should NOT be scrapped. |
