Games Played w/e 4th September 2004

Ladies Champion Of Champions.
As the Aberlady Bowling Club Ladies Champion for 2004, Joy McLeod represented the club in the ladies Champion of Champions Competition. Her attempt to win the trophy was halted at the first hurdle as she lost 9-21 to Leanne Baillie from Port Seton. In a game which was not properly reflected by the scoreline Joy was often lying shot, only for Leanne to take the shot with her last bowl. Leanne went on to win the competition.

Gents Verses Ladies
On Friday 3rd September the annual 'fun' game between the Men and the Women players of the club took place on a sunny evening. The only thing at stake in this game is pride, as the team that loses 'wins' a large wooden spoon which is hung in their locker room for the next twelve months.

The game, played in the usual good spirit, turned out to be very one-sided with the Men coming out on top on three of the four rinks, with the other one ending level at 9-9. The over all score was 61-27 for the Gents.

This event is usually well supported but this year less than thirty players took part.

Games Played w/e 21st August 2004

Champion of Champions
Bill Dunleavey recently represented Aberlady in the Champion of Champions competition. The draw, and subsequent results saw him come up against players from Castlepark, Elphinstone, Athelstaneford ( semi-final ) and Macmerry ( final ).

In the semi-finals Bill and Colin Bonner ( Macmerry ) who would meet in the final, both had convincing wins. While Colin overcame Haddington champion Andy Burt 21-10, Bill eased into the final with a 21-6 win against Colin Herschell of Athelstaneford.

In the final, Bill started better than Colin scoring three singles in the first three ends, only for Colin to find his form to win six of the next seven ends to lead 12-5. By this time Colin was in command and it took just five more ends to decide the outcome of the game. With Bill winning just one of those ends - picking up two shots on the eleventh end- it was Colin who won 21-7.

East Lothian Finals
Aberlady's Senior Four went into the finals day of the East Lothian competitions, as defending champions. The four representing the club were Bob McIntosh, Alan Brown, Jock Brodie and Jackie Greenwood.

In the final against Stenton, the game could have gone either way as it was very keenly contested. So much so that it took an extra end to decide the destination of the trophy. It was Aberlady who came out on top with a 14-13 win.

In the East Lothian finals - held at Elphinstone BC - Andrew Pringle became East Lothian Youth Champion at his third attempt, when he beat Scott Rutherford of Port Seton B.C, 21-16.

Ladies Fours
Aberlady Ladies had a very good run in the East Lothian Ladies Fours and with the Gents Seniors winning their equivelent title - The East Lothian Senior Fours, there was hope that Aberlady could secure the double. In the semi-final they played local rivals Gullane and were lying game on the last end but eventually lost out by 1 shot. Gullane went on to win the competition.

Games Played w/e 7th August 2004

Jubilee Cup
On Saturday 7th August in the Jubilee Cup semi-final Aberlady put up a very good challenge against a strong Port Seton side littered with County players.

In the singles, George Marshall lost out only narrowly to Craig McFarlane 18-21, which gave Port Seton an early advantage. The pairs ( Brian Hunter, Bill Dunleavey ) and fours ( Lindsay Bell, Gordon Hunter, Gary Hands, Jock Cunningham ) were also involved in close games and with the Aberlady triple of Mike Carey, Ali Russell and Jock Brodie always in control against a very experienced trio, the game could have gone any way.

It was 'stretch' Morgan who swung the game in Port Seton's favour when on the last end of the pairs - with the score peels at 10-10 - he collected a shot with a drive to win 11-10. When the Aberlady rink failed to pick up a seven on the last end to take the game to shots, the game was all over.

Jubilee Cup
Aberlady beat Dunbar to win through to a semi-final encounter against division one champions Port Seton, at Polson Park on 7th August.

Games Played w/e 31st July 2004

Gents Division 1
After the 8-0 defeat by Castlepark in the re-arranged fixture the previous evening this game away to Haddington had little meaning for both clubs. It resulted in another defeat for Aberlady this time, 2-6. The rink skipped by Jock Cunningham won by six shots, while Jim Pringle lost by the same score and Andrew Dunleavey lost by three shots.

Gents Division 1
In a re-arranged league fixture away against Castlepark, one which Aberlady needed to get points from to have any chance of avoiding relegation, it was the home side who came out on top, 8-0, a result which consigned Aberlady's division one side to the second division.

.

Gents Division 4
Aberlady headed to Athelstaneford for their last league game knowing that a top three place was secure but that to gain promotion they would have to win and hope that Castlepark 'B' lost at Port Seton.

As it turned out it was - on two rinks - a very close game. While the rink of Kenny Mason was in control throughout and won 21-12, Gary Hands four won 14-13 and Mike Carey's lost by one shot, 12-13. Although the team achieved their aim of winning the game it wasn't enough as Castlepark also won and in doing so became division four champions.

Gents Seniors
Like the division one and four sides, the Seniors team went into this fixture knowing that they needed a good result, as they held a one shot lead over Longniddry at the top of the table.

In this away game against North Berwick Aberlady proved too strong on the day finishing 5-1 winners to retain the Seniors championship.

Ladies Seniors
The Ladies took to the green in this week's fixture as league leaders and by the end of it they were league champions, with one game still to play.

Halkett Cup
This first game - played at Aberlady - in the annual home and away fixture against Dirleton was a one-sided affair with Aberlady winning comfortably on all three rinks.

The final score was 73-15.

Jubilee Cup
Aberlady defeated Stenton ( away ) to progress to the next round

Youths League
This week the Youth team recorded a fine 15-6 win.

Halkett Cup
This first game - played at Aberlady - in the annual home and away fixture against Dirleton was a one-sided affair with Aberlady winning comfortably on all three rinks.

The final score was 73-15.

Games Played w/e 24th July 2004

Gents Division 1
uncertainty, over whether Aberlady would lose the points for failing to fulfill last week's tie against Castlepark, made this a must win game for the team as this was their 'second last' league fixture.

As had been the case often during the season, it was Bill Dunleavey's rink which led the way in this home game against Tranent, finishing eleven shots up, 20-9. Jock Cunningham followed suit with a 22-16 win, while Jim Pringle lost 11-22.

Gents Division 4
Aberlady went into this fixture knowing that a win at home against Macmerry would put them level with, or in front of, promotion rivals Castlepark 'B', if the latter were beaten by Tranent.

As things turned out both Aberlady and Castlepark 'B'won their matches 6-2. So it all rests on the final matches next week. The rink scores were: Mike Carey, 19-15 : Kenny Mason, 13-16 : Gary Hands 22-15.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Seniors made the defence of their title that little bit more difficult when they lost this week's league encounter against nearest challengers Longniddry. Aberlady still holds a one shot lead over Longniddry going into the last week's fixtures.

Ladies Seniors
Aberlady Ladies won their game.

Games Played w/e 17th July 2004

Brown Trophy
Aberlady win the Brown Trophy at Polson Park. The youngest player in the winning Aberlady team, Ali Greenlay, collected the trophy.

Gents Division 1
The division one side were unable to fulfill this week's fixture against Castlepark as they were unable to raise a team. The fixture was re-arranged for Thursday 30th July

Gents Division 4
With a much changed team - due to holiday commitments - Aberlady returned from their away fixture against East Linton with an excellent 6-2 win.

The rink scores were: George McLeod, 19-17 : Kenny Mason, 23-10. : Gary Hands, 12-16

Gents Seniors
If the Gents Senior team ( sitting at the top of the table )were thinking that the run-in would be a formality they will have thought differently after their latest game - against Tranent - on the Aberlady green. They surprisingly lost 1-5, which helped their nearest challengers Longniddry.

Ladies Seniors

Brown Trophy
Aberlady Beat Winton to reach the semi-finals of the Brown Trophy at Polson Park, Tranent on July 17th.. All three rinks were well up.

Games Played w/e 3rd July 2004

Gents Division 1
Aberlady's division 1 side went into their latest game knowing it would be a tough test, as they were playing last years champions, Port seton.

As things turned out Aberlady emerged from this home encounter with a credible 4-4 draw.

Rink scores were ; Bill Dunleavey,16-17, Jim Florence, 8-16 and Jock cunningham, 26-9.

Gents Division 4
In a match which was halted for a time due to a cloudburst Aberlady picked up a maximum points win, 8-0.

The rinks of Gary Hands and Kenny Mason were in a commanding position for most of the game and won 20-12 and 23-8 respectively.

The excitement of the evening was on rink six where the rink of Mike Carey trailed their Haddington counterparts 2-8. They then found their form and went into the last end one shot up. They were then lying four shots with a bowl to play and the haddington skip burnt the end. In the replayed end the Aberlady skip drew the shot for a final score of 12-10.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Seniors picked up another maximumpoints win, 6-0, against E L labour Club, at Tranent

Ladies Seniors
Result not known.

Youths League
The youths appear to be going through a bad patch at present and it continued in this weeks match against Castlepark '2' when they lost by 7? shots.

Ladies Evening Triples
The Aberlady triple won by a score of 14-9.

Games Played w/e 26th June 2004

Gents Division 1
With only a few games remaining, the team were looking to collect enough points to move them up the table, and they returned to Aberlady with a fine 6-2 win, after this away fixture at Elphinstone.

Once again Bill Dunleavey's rink lead the way, with a five shot win. Jim Pringle also won - by six shots, while Jock Cunningham finished 4 or 5 shots down.

Gents Division 4
In their quest for promotion Aberlady had the difficult task of taking something from this encounter with division leaders Tranent.

They used home advantage to to good effect, inflicting a maximum 8-0 defeat on the champions elect. This was Tranent's first defeat of the season.

Gents Seniors
Because of the atrocious weather in the County on Thursday the Gents seniors match was re-arranged. It will now be played on Monday 28th June.

Ladies Seniors
Due to Longniddry being unable to field a team, Aberlady were awarded the two points, and five shots. They therefore remain at the top of the league.

Ladies Evening Triples
In their latest encounter, the Aberlady ladies came away from Gifford with a win against - i think it was Dunbar.

Youths League
FREE WEEK.

Games Played w/e 19th June 2004

Gents Division 1
Already anchored at the foot of division 1 - with 23points, Aberlady were keen to make home advantage count against fellow strugglers West Barns. It was disappointing therefore that all three rinks lost, for a maximum 8-0 defeat.

On the plus side, the division is so close that one win can catapult a team up quite a few places, so all is not lost.

Gents Division 4
After losing last week to fellow promotion hopefuls Castlepark 'B' it was essential Aberlady took something out of this latest away game - against Port Seton 'B'.

They emerged from the game with a 6-2 win due to wins by Gary Hands, 16-10 and new skip Kenny Mason, 14-9, while in a game where they were fighting the rink as well as their opponents Mike Carey's rink lost 20-11.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Seniors had another maximum 6-0 win, over Castlepark 'A' (a), to increse their lead at the top of the Gents Senior League - division 1. For the next game they will be without two stalwarts of the side, Jock Brodie and Jackie Greenwood, due to holiday commitments.

Ladies Seniors
The ladies picked up another two points in their latest league encounter. In an away game against Castlepark 'B' the Aberlady side won by 5 shots

Youths League
The Youth team headed for Tranent eager to get back to winning ways after their heavy defeat last week. Instead they suffered a further loss this time by seven shots, 8-15.

Ladies Evening Triples
In their latest game - against East Linton - the ladies came out of a very competitive encounter with a 19-17 win, at Aberlady.

Games Played w/e 12th June 2004

Gents Division 1
With the league season now at the half way stage and the team anchored at the foot of the table, it was imperitive that Aberlady came out of this home game against Haddington, with some points.

Billy Dunleavey's rink continued their good run with a credible 17-17 draw, while a 20-15 win by Jock Cunningham and a narrow 12-13 defeat for Jim Pringle insured Aberlady a 5-3 win.

Gents Division 4
Although not a 'must win' game this away encounter with Castlepark was one in which Aberlady were looking for points to keep alive their promotion chances.

The rink of Alfie Moss started well but were unable to sustain it and went on to lose 12-17. Gary Hands rink never got themselves into the game at all and were convincingly beaten 11-23. Meanwhile the rink of Mike Carey started off badly winning only one of the first seven ends to be behind 8-3, They then picked up a six to take the lead and took command of the game to run out 21-13 winners, which meant an overall 6-2 defeat for the team.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Seniors once again made the game look easy, by recording another convincing victory. Jock Brodie's rink won 21-8 and Jock Cunningham's won 17-7. Their unfortunate opponents, in this game played at Aberlady, were North Berwick.

Ladies Seniors
The ladies had another excellent win - by seven shots, at home against Prestongrange.

Youths League
In what was expected to be a difficult game Aberlady lost heavily away to E. L. Co-op, by 20-6. The team are still doing well though as they are second in the table.

Ladies Evening Triples
The Aberlady Triple peeled their latest game in this league.

Games Played w/e 5th June 2004

Gents Division 1
This week's game - away to Tranent - was always going to be a difficult one, and so it turned out, as it ended 4-4.

This was a good result for Aberlady against a side full of quality players and it will hopefully give them the boost needed to lift them up the table.

Bill Dunleavey's rink continues to bring home the points, this week with a 6 shot win against Dean Higgins, 20-14, while that of Jock Cunningham won by 6 shots against John McCrorie, 18-12. The third rink skipped by Jim Pringle lost to Scott Kennedy 25-5.

Gents Division 4
This was a must win for Aberlady if they were to have any chance of promotion as they already trailed - in third place - leaders Castlepark 'B' by 11 points. As things turned out Aberlady won 8-0 with two rinks well up while the other was a closer affair.

Rink scores were;
Alfie Moss, 28-9: Gary Hands, 26-12: Mike Carey, 16-13.

With the next game being away to Castlepark 'B' the eight points were very welcome.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Seniors returned from Longniddry with another win, this time 4-2. There was little in the game with the rink of Jock Brodie 7 shots up, while that of Jock Cunningham lost by 4 shots.

Ladies Seniors
The ladies returned from this away game against Port Seton with a one shot win. As with one of their previous games they were always playing catch up, only gaining the lead on the last end.

Youths League
Aberlady's Youth team continued to show how well they are progressing with another excellent performance, at home to haddington. They were never in any trouble, as they raced to a 7-1 lead after six ends and only dropped one more shot in the remainder of the game, to win comfortably, 20-2.

Ladies Evening Triples
This week's match resulted in a one shot defeat for the Aberlady team ( if i remember correctly ). Their opponents were Gifford.

Games Played w/e 29th May 2004

Gents Division 1
The team's woes continued with another defeat, this time 6-2 at home to Castlepark. The only rink picking up points consistently is that of Bill Dunleavey and it was this four that once again picked up Aberlady's only points. The rink scores were; Bill Dunleavey, 16-6; Jim Florence, 11-22; Jim Pringle, 8-17.

Gents Division 4
After a disappointing midweek defeat against Macmerry, the team recorded an 8-0 home win against an in form Athelstaneford side. The three rinks were in what is probably their strongest formation and this showed with convincing wins for all three. Scores were as follows: Mike Carey, 22-6; Gary Hands, 23-8 ; Alfie Moss, 18-8.

Once again it must be emphasised just how well the Youth players are contributing to the team, often out-playing more experienced players

Gents Seniors
The Gents Senior team continued their recent good form with a 6-0 away win against Tranent.

Gents Division 4
The team took to the Macmerry green confident of picking up a win to keep them in with a chance of promotion but it was not to be as Macmerry grabbed all the points.

Although it was an 8-0 defeat, on the rinks of Mike Carey and Gary Hands the result was only decided on the last two or three ends.

More consistency is a must if promotion is to become a reality

Ladies Seniors
The Ladies Seniors had no game this week.

Youths League
The Youth team took to the green anticipating a difficult game against an unbeaten Port Seton team. Instead, they inflicted a heavy 23-8 defeat on the league leaders.

Aberlady was in control throughout the encounter, with Port Seton not scoring until the 5th end by which time they were 7-0 down. The comeback was only temporary however as Aberlady won three of the next four ends to extend their lead to 19-4, before wrapping up the game in the remaining ends.

This was a very impressive display by all the players, with every one of them playing their part in the victory.

Ladies Evening Triples
The triple of Joan Davie, Joy McLeod and Agnes Cunningham enjoyed a close encounter with their counterparts from Port Seton. Despite some excellent bowling neither of the teams were able to take control of this game and the score reflected this. It was 8-8 after nine ends, 10-10 after thirteen and finished at peels, 11-11.

Games Played w/e 22nd May 2004

Gents Division 1
On the back of a string of poor results Aberlady visited East Linton hoping to return with a win of any kind. This they did with all three rinks finishing up, for a maximum eight points win.

Bill Dunleavey and Jim pringle's rinks were one shot up and Jim 'Flo' Florence finished two up. This was an excellent result and hopefully one that kickstarts their season.

Gents Division 4
In a home game where there was changes in the make-up of all the rinks the team managed to finish up on two rinks with the other one heavily beaten.

Gary Hands was always in control on rink six to finish 22-17 up while on rink five Mike Carey picked up a seven and lying two down at the last trailed the jack for a count of four shots to win 19-17. On rink four Alfie Moss's rink had 'one of those games' to go down 8-22.

The result was four points each for Aberlady and East Linton.

Gents Seniors
In a game in which one rink was heavily beaten, the Gents Seniors came away from EL Co-op with two points, which keeps them at the top of the league.

Ladies Seniors
The Ladies Seniors continued their good form managing to pick up another point in a 17-17 draw, away to Castlepark 1. It's an even better result than it may seem as they were 13-2 down at one point and still a shot down going into the last end.

Youths League
The youths recorded their first win of the season away to Elphinstone, where they finished 9 shots up at 17-8.

Games Played w/e 15th May 2004

Gents Division 1
Aberlady's division one side continue to find life difficult. This week's game, away to last year's division one champions Port Seton, was always going to be a difficult encounter and so it proved, with Aberlady losing 8-0. Hopefully they will find form soon before they become embroiled in a relegation battle.

Gents Division 4
The team continued their impressive start to the season with a 6-2 away win against Haddington 'A'. The rinks of Mike Carey and Gary Hands won well in the end 22-12 and 21-13 despite early setbacks. Mike lost a six to go behind 8-2 and Gary reliquished a seven shot lead before both battled back for victory. Meanwhile Alfie Moss's four were involved in a close encounter throughout and only lost in the end by one shot, 16-17.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Senior team continue to lead the pack after another fine win, this time at home to E L Labour. Both rinks finished well up.

Gents Division 4
In their first away game of the season, against a strong Tranent team who fielded at least three top team players in their side, Aberlady came away with a 4-4 draw.

While the rink of Alfie Moss recorded a 14 shot win against Jamie Gordon's, those of Gary Hands and Mike Carey lost - Gary by 3 shots ( against Jimmy Wood ) and Mike by 4 shots ( against Adam Robertson ).

Ladies Seniors
The Ladies Senior team got back to winning ways with an impressive home win against EL Co-op, 27-6. This included a count of seven shots at one end and a maximum eight count at another.

Youths League
In their first league outing of the season the Aberlady youths were left with mixed emotions after the game as they played very well on the night and looked very much in control for three quarters of the game - they led 5-0 after two ends and 9-4 after seven.

A spirited fightback by their opponents though, saw the Castlepark side take the lead, 10-11, after eleven ends and Aberlady were unable to get back to a winning position in the final two ends.

Games Played w/e 8th May 2004

Gents Division 1
With only two games played so far it is already looking to be a difficult season ahead for the Gents division 1 side. They have managed to pick up only four points out of a possible sixteen, with all of those won by the rink of Bill Dunleavey. On this occasion his rink won 20-16, while Jim Pringle lost 13-21 and Jackie Greenwood went down 18-21.

Gents Division 4
After their defeat by Castlepark 'B' just two days before the team were keen to return to winning ways when they played hosts to Port Seton 'B'. On another dull, cold evening the rinks of Mike Carey and Gary Hands raced into early leads which they sustained until the end to win easily by 23-6 and 16-5 respectively, while the rink of Alfie Moss was behind throughout and in the end lost by four shots, 11-15.

Gents Seniors
Aberlady followed their home win against Castlepark 'A' last week with another win, this time away to Prestongrange 'A'. On a heavy green - many of them appear to be this season - both rinks finished up. Jackie Greenwood's rink were easy winners 23-6 ( Jackie didn't play due to holiday commitments ) while Jock Cunningham finished 2 shots up.

Gents Division 4
The division 4 side were hoping to take advantage of having their first three games of the season at home. Castlepark 'B' however had obviously not read the script as they ran out easy winners on all three rinks 16-18, 12-17 and 13-18 against Gary Hands, Alfie Moss and Mike Carey respectively.

Ladies Seniors
In this, their first away game of the season, the ladies were unable to add to their win of the previous week, when they went down - by 5 shots - to Longniddry.

ELBA Trophy
Aberlady went into this away game against Macmerry confident that they would be playing in the next round two days later but events turned out very differently. On the night only the pair of B. Hunter and W. Dunleavey finished up, by 1 shot.

Games Played w/e 1st May 2004

Gents Division 1
A report in the East Lothian Courier had Aberlady's division one team down as one of the teams who would be involved in the relegation battle this year and the team did little to dispel this theory when they lost to West Barns 6-2 ( away ) on a very heavy green. The only rink to finish up was that of Bill Dunleavey - against Alistair Kennedy - by 2 shots, while Jim Pringle and Jim Florence went down by 6 shots and 2 shots respectively.

Gents Division 4
The division four side - relegated last year after just one season in division three - had a very impressive start to the league campaign with an 8-0 home win against Dirleton. A feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that there were numerous players unavailable, and four youngsters had to play to make up the team. All of the youngsters performed well and certainly had a big say in the final result.

The rink performance of the evening was that of Alfie Moss with a crushing 20 shot win. While that of Mike Carey - with an early 11-1 lead and looking comfortable - struggled to win by 3 shots ( 16-13 ) and the rink skipped by Gary Hands fought back to win 17-13 after being behind in the early stages.

Ladies Seniors
The Ladies first game in the Seniors League turned out to be a very competative one. Right from the start, the Aberlady team was playing 'catch up', without ever being able to get ahead of their opponents, but in the end their patience was rewarded when they managed to do enough on the final end to win the game by 1 shot.

Gents Seniors
The Gents Seniors first game of the season was a complete contrast to that of their female counterparts, as they were in command throughout, against a very good side. On a very cold and windy day - one player even wore gloves - when the players were battling the elements as well as their opponents, both home rinks finished with almost identical scores with the rink skipped by Jock Cunningham winning 16-8 and that of Jackie Greenwood 16-9.

For the first time the Aberlady team took advantage of the new ruling allowing 'younger' members ( 55 years and over ) to take part in the Seniors League. H. L. Bell was the first Aberlady player to benefit when he lead for Jock Cunningham.
