6th August 2009 - Leagues Update
Aberlady's division 1 side went into this weeks away game againts E L Co-op optimistic of a good result, with the Co-op side struggling this season. But it was the home side - desperate for points to avoid relegation - who used home advantage to emerge as 6-2 winners. Hopefully Aberlady can return to winning ways in next weeks home game against West Barns. The division 3 side went into this home game against Castlepark aware that a win would get them nearer fourth bottom place ( if the details in The Courier were correct ) and another step from the drop zone. However it was another disappointing night, with Gary Hand's rink once again being the only one to collect points for Aberlady, in a 6-2 defeat. The Gents Senior side were at home again this week their opponents being Prestongrange. As has been the story this season Aberlady once again could only manage a win on one rink, that of Jock Cunningham who finished 19-12. But this was adjusted to 19-9 as the Castlepark rink only had three players and so lost a quarter of their score. The other rink skipped by Jackie Greenwood finished ten shots down, to peel the game 3-3. 24th July 2009 - Leagues Update
Tonight's top team game was a home clash with Castlepark. After defeat in the last game Aberlady were aware that a good performence was needed to get their season back on track. But with the away team challenging for the division 1 title they were in no mood to squander points. Aberlady went down 7-1, with Bill Dunleavey's rink initially winning but then they had to lose a quarter of their score as they only had three players, rather than the four required. On another very wet evening the division 3 team headed off for their game at E L Labour confident of adding a few points to the seven collected the previous week. It didn't turn out that way with only one rink winning, that of Gary Hands ( 21-10 ). Bill Fotheringham's rink lost a close encounter 18-12 while Mike Carey's had an uncharacteristic heavy defeat 32-7 against John Holmes. The Gents Senior side were at home to E L Co-op in a fixture that was more for pride than anything else, with them having little chance of retaining the league trophy. Aberlady won the encounter 5-1 with Jock Brodie skipping his rink to a win, while John Hamilton, three up playing the last end lost a three to end up with a peel. Early this week the division 1 team played their postponed game against Tranent -postponed from last Friday due to bad weather. It turned out badly for Aberlady with the team returning home with only two points in a 6-2 defeat. The only rink to win was that of Bill Dunleavey, in the process picking up a maximum eight shots at one end. 17th July 2009 - Leagues Update
The division 1 game against Tranent, at Polson Park, was cancelled, leaving the spotlight once again on the division 3 side who were at home against Port Seton. With heavy rain falling from the beginning, the skips agreed that the game should be played over eleven ends rather than the usual seventeen, eleven ends being the required legal minimum. The rinks skipped by Mike Carey and Gary Hands raced into early leads and were rarely troubled and both went on to win over the shortened distance, with scores of 16-12 and 14-7 respectively. While Jackie Greenwood's rink - skipped by Bill Fotheringham - were involved in a tight game which ended in an 8-8 peel. The match result ( 7-1 ) gave Aberlady a very welcome seven points to put them on 43 in total.
The previous day the Gents Senior team suffered yet another loss, at Castlepark, in what has been a very disappointing season for them. The final score was 4-2 to Castlepark, Jock Brodie being the successful Aberlady skip. 10th July 2009 - Leagues Update
Division 1 were back in action with a tough home game against Port Seton. With only Bill Dunleavey's rink picking up any points a 6-2 defeat was the best that they could manage. The club's second team were away at Stenton where they needed to pick up some points to move them further from the bottom. Three points was what they had to settle for, with Mike Carey's rink securing the only win, while Jock Brodie narrowly missed picking up a five at the last end instead having to settle for four shots, and a peel. Gary Hands rink lost despite a valient fightback after losing shots early in the game. The Gents Seniors travelled to North Berwick with high hopes of keeping alive their slim chance of retaining the league trophy but failed to collect the points necessary to do so. 3rd July 2009 - Leagues Update
The division 1 team had a free week so the spotlight was on division 3 where Aberlady were away against Longniddry. With Aberlady only picking up one point in the corresponding home fixture, thanks to a peel by Mike Carey's rink, and with their near neighbours six places higher in the table, it looked like being a difficult game. However thanks to wins by the rinks of Gary Hands and Jackie Greenwood and a narrow loss by Mike Carey's Aberlady headed for home 6-2 winners. In fact half way through the game it looked like being a maximum points victory as at that point all three rinks were up but with one rink letting shots slip away in the second half they had to be content with six points. In the Gents Senior League - against Ormiston at home - Jackie Greenwood and Mike Carey led their rinks to seven and seventeen shot wins respectively to secure maximum points ( 6-0 ). 26th June 2009 - Leagues Update
It is just past the halfway stage in the Gents Division1, Division 3 and Seniors leagues and it is a mixed story. In the top division Aberlady is in third place just one point behind the leaders - despite losing 6-2, last Friday, at East Linton, while the division three team is sitting bottom despite a credible 4-4 draw with top team East Linton.Meanwhile the Gents Senior team, who in recent seasons have dominated their league, winning it for the last eight years, are struggling for form. In the top four and within touching distance of the top before this week's game, they suffered a heavy defeat away to West Barns. On Saturday 11th July the club held the annual Open Pairs competition which was well attended, with twenty four pairs taking part. After the group stage the quarter finalists were an even mix of Aberlady and non Aberlady players but with local knowledge possibly helping, after the quarter and semi-finals were played the two remaining pairs were from the home green. The competition was won by Brian Hunter and Gordon White who defeated Bill Fotheringham and Jackie Greenwood in a very close contest which required an extra end after the whistle to decide it. Going To Ayr
Once again Aberlady found success in the District Finals when, on the Haddington green, Jim Pringle won 21-16 against Allan Young to secure his place in the Scottish Championships at Ayr. |
